Children's Hospital to Reopen Monday
NEW ORLEANS (AP) Children's Hospital suffered little or no damage or looting during and immediately after Hurricane Katrina and will reopen Monday, hospital officials said. The hospital had set up outpatient clinics two weeks after the hurricane hit to treat patients who were living in Baton Rouge and Lafayette, and its outpatient center in Metairie had opened Tuesday.
All emergency, surgical and medical services will resume at the hospital Monday, the hospital said Friday.
The hospital evacuated 65 patients to other hospitals in Louisiana and across the country after Katrina hit Aug. 29. All were out by Sept. 1, officials said. They said it was the first time in the hospital's 50-year history that services stopped at the main campus.
The hospital had been ready to open once vital services were restored. City officials announced Thursday that tap water was safe to drink.
Children's Hospital treats more than 56,000 patients a year from every parish in Louisiana and throughout the country. Its 440-member medical staff includes 280 pediatric specialists.
