Improvement Services

Working together to deliver safe, effective, efficient care.

Powered by access to exclusive, pediatric-specific data and driven by the commitment of 42 children’s hospitals to improving quality and enhancing performance, CHCA Owner Hospitals are working together to deliver safe, effective, efficient care.

A range of CHCA Performance Improvement services help Owner Hospitals improve locally, while CHCA works nationally to position its Owners to lead how pediatric care is measured for quality and reimbursement:

  • CHCA is quickly becoming the "go to" organization for pediatric measures. Collaborating with the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI), Nemours and National Initiative for Children’s Healthcare Quality (NICHQ), CHCA is developing new measures to fill the gap in the industry’s movement toward greater accountability in the care provided to children.

  • Our measures are created using JCAHO-endorsed methodology(Pedi-QS) that was developed by CHCA and its partners. All measures are available in PHIS, allowing CHCA Owners to improve care BEFORE measures are mandated for accreditation and pay for performance. Today, the National Quality Forum(NQF) endorses CHCA measures for use by pediatric providers nationwide.

  • All U.S. CHCA Owner Hospitals now serve on a Leapfrog Group taskforce, helping to refine the Leapfrog Group safe practices to reflect pediatric care. The task force is charged with developing pediatric-specific "leaps" and creating new weighting criteria to ensure fair scoring for children’s hospitals.

  • CHCA is also leading the creation of pediatric information technology standards. Led by Andy Spooner, M.D., director of pediatrics at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center and David Classen, M.D., a CHCA consultant, the Health Level Seven (HL7) Pediatric Data Standards Special Interest Group (PDSSIG) is defining the critical pediatric-specific data standards necessary for standardized quality and outcomes reporting and measurement. The group’s vision is that child health professionals will use clinical information systems that consistently meet the health care needs of infants, children and adolescents.

CHCA is driving children's hospitals to the highest level of performance by creating cultures of improvement and a data-driven foundation for safe, waste-free, error-free care.
